“After The Rain” is one of my favourite ballads played by John Coltrane…it’s true, tasty perfection! It can be found on the album called, “The Gentle Side of John Coltrane”. The whole album is divine and features greats such as Duke Ellington, Johnny Hartman, McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones, to name a few. This song stirs my soul and always stops me in my tracks. I really enjoy how much space is used and how round everything sounds. It is simple, thoughtful and alluring. I try to visualize Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Roy Haynes recording this together and I try imagine what they were thinking, saying or feeling for this moment to be captured so perfectly. I feel like they’re listening with one giant ear and responding with one giant heart and working together to create a sonic image that sounds like a sunset. Press play and linger just a little bit longer under the covers or over that warm cup of tea. “After The Rain” is perfect for this Vancouver Sunday.
