I have three words for you: Cécile. McLorin. Salvant.
Don’t let the glasses fool you. Cécile McLorin Savant is a fantastic, serious student of music. You can’t not hear that when you listen to her new album “For One To Love”. Cécile and her trio are impeccable in every way. She has a pitch perfect, versatile voice and can deliver a lyric with the heft of a wise 80 year old. Her vocal flexibility will mesmerize you, her song choices will woo you and, her musicianship will stir you. The trio of Aaron Diehl (piano), Paul Skive (bass) and Lawrence Leathers (drums) are impressive and perfect in every way, their individual voices are clear and distinct while creating a stellar ensemble sound that purrs at any tempo.
Listen to one of my favourite ballads off the album called “Look at Me”. Cécile’s voice is so nimble and heartbreaking.
McLorin is the past, present and future rolled into one delightfully beautiful, precise and charming package. Enjoy!
