Join us on March 8, 2011 to say farewell to Sistahood, while we Light a Spark with the Girls Action Foundation

Over the last 10 years Sistahood has become a dynamic community platform showcasing women in the arts and promoting arts for social change. She has been a Kali-esque destroyer of outmoded gender barriers, definitions and stereotypes, while at the same time has been a crone-mother to all of those who she has welcomed into the fold. She has asked us to explore how Gender, Sex and the Body is reflected in our art and communities, and has taught us that Love is a Verb. She has asked us to think about our Future Ancestors and has challenged us to become Cultural Catalysts. But most of all she became more than any of us could have ever imagined.

Tuesday March 8th at Calabash Bistro (www.calabashbistro.com) we will say goodbye to her Sistahood style! With good people, amazing music and an excellent party!!

Although this event will mark the end of Sistahood it will also mark the launch of an inspiring campaign from the Girls Action Foundation called Light a Spark. This initiative aims to build a strong base of support for girls and young women across Canada. Kicking off on International Women’s Day, March 8th, the campaign will be driven by women leaders – or SPARKS – who are strong and powerful bright lights, and have made their mark in their respective fields.

Rachel Flood, the Sistahood founder, has been selected as a Spark for this campaign and we thought encouraging our supporters to light a spark for young women across Canada would be a fitting way to close 10 years of a festival that has light more than a couple sparks along the way.
