This Sunday’s jam is coming from the soulful side of things. “Day Dreaming” is one of Aretha Franklin’s breakout hits off of her 1972 Grammy Award winning album, “Young, Gifted & Black”. This track coos from start to finish and is perfect for your lazy Sunday. It grooves from top to bottom and sits in one of the deepest pockets thanks to Bernard Purdie (drums) and Chuck Rainey (bass). The feel just percolates and sits in an “in between” tempo. It’s not quite a ballad, it’s not mid tempo. It takes skill, focus and the act of living to be able to play like that. Aretha’s vocal delivery is so cool and easy. It’s almost like she is whispering. You can hear the longing in her voice.
I hear this track and all I can think of is butter…Listen again and check out the beautiful guitar playing by Cornell Dupree. Listen again and hear Hubert Laws flute weaving in and out and the soaring background voices…Can you hear how they really complete the dreamy landscape. This is (soul) music at its best. It’s easy to see why Aretha had so much success with this album.
