It started, like most good ideas, over beer and song. A few short years later, Queer as Funk is renowned for its tight rhythm section, hot horns, and killer vocals, bringing together the city’s best musicians in an explosive, high-energy dance band. There’s nothing this tight-knit band loves more than performing together, and that love is palpable to audiences everywhere. ​ “There’s nowt so queer as folk”, or so the old English adage goes. Queer As Funk believes in celebrating differences, and what better way than with a big ol’ dance party? With special guest, the Queen of Canadian Soul, the sensational Dawn Pemberton! Beautiful harmonies by East Van’s own acapella soul quartet, What It Is! Featuring Mimi Beyene, Cass King, Patti Powell and Carol Wiedemann! The incredible Djslade Macdoog will be joining us onstage! From June 30 to July 3, Canada Days at Nathan Phillips Square will bring Canada’s rich cultural fabric to life through an incredible mix of music, dance, circus, and street arts. The dynamic music program features two stages showcasing current urban, indie, roots, pop and world music by emerging and established artists from across the city, all regions of the country, and around the world – reflecting Toronto’s kaleidoscopic character, cultural diversity and creative energy. A hospitality area offering food and beverage will be available for the public throughout the day. A nightly fireworks show will end the evening at 10:55 pm. Canada Days is produced by the City of Toronto in partnership with the Province of Ontario’s Ontario150 Program and the Government of Canada.

Roots ‘n’ Wings and Rhythm ‘n’ Roots will join forces for our annual Winter Concert – Sat Jan 21st – nearly 100 voices bursting into beautiful song. These two East Van choirs traveled to Cuba together last year and are excited to be sharing the stage again – joining forces to create lush, intricate and juicy musical offerings! Roots ‘n’ Wings – a 45 voice, soulful women’s choir under the direction of Dawn Pemberton will sing a collection of songs that speak to the heart, celebrate home and connectedness, and call for unity. Rhythm ‘n’ Roots – a 50+ adventurous mixed choir under the direction of Karla Mundy will explore some of the beautiful and rich music of the North – playful Quebecois rounds, new songs by BC women, Corsican polyphony, Georgian gallops, a re-imagined shape note hymn, powerful Bulgarian and Hungarian a cappella songs and a Croatian love poem. We will be joined by some wonderful musicians Steve Charles (banjo and guitar) Patrick Metzger (bass and guitar) Paul Bray (percussion) Celebrate our shared human stories and sounds through beautiful music and community.
