Mad Riddim featuring Dawn Pemberton Vancity Roots and Culture Experience is a FREE interactive reggae, hip-hop, soul and R&B music jam featuring some of the best seasoned and up and coming local artists Vancouver has to offer. While celebrating the Earthstrong (birthday) of Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia under the red, gold and green banner, participants will get a taste of the cultural experience rooted in reggae music, most notably the One Love philosophy propagated by music legend Bob Marley and dozens of other reggae greats over the years. The Earthstrong of Haile Selassie I is celebrated by thousands of Rastafarians all over the world and is a remembrance of the Emperor’s commitment to peace, unity and freedom for all human beings regardless of ethnicity or economic status. After 12 years of quietly sending ripples through the independent music scene, David Ward’s latest, a cinematic and soulful opus, Violet, Gold + Rose, has garnered support from some of the most respected artists in music. Ward has spent the last two years between Vancouver, London and Berlin, building on the success of his last album, Transitioning. The run has included opening slots for grammy-winner Lisa Fischer, Becca Stevens, Jacob Collier, and a sold-out show at London’s historic Union Chapel with fellow Canadian, Frazey Ford. Between 2011 and 2016 the annual event sold out the historic theatre by bringing together 35+ of the city and country’s most acclaimed musicians alongside the kids of Saint James Music Academy (SJMA) raising awareness and more than $200,000 for the non-profit music school (started 10 years ago by DTES resident and mother, Kathy Walker). Helping to kick off Juno week you can expect another 8+ artists performing short stripped down sets of music including a performance by event founders and former juno nominees, Hey Ocean!. From June 30 to July 3, Canada Days at Nathan Phillips Square will bring Canada’s rich cultural fabric to life through an incredible mix of music, dance, circus, and street arts. The dynamic music program features two stages showcasing current urban, indie, roots, pop and world music by emerging and established artists from across the city, all regions of the country, and around the world – reflecting Toronto’s kaleidoscopic character, cultural diversity and creative energy. A hospitality area offering food and beverage will be available for the public throughout the day. A nightly fireworks show will end the evening at 10:55 pm. Canada Days is produced by the City of Toronto in partnership with the Province of Ontario’s Ontario150 Program and the Government of Canada.
