Bill Withers can do no wrong. His songs, voice, music are still relevant and poignant as ever. Here is a recording of one of his classics “I Can’t Write Left Handed” from his 1972 concert at Carnegie Hall.

Now fast forward 28 years and check out The Roots and John Legend tackle this tune with a sense of respect, passion and creativity. I love this version just as much as the original. I think it’s infused with the same frustration and uncertainty that Bill’s original had, but I think JL and The Roots brought a little more urgency to the table, it’s a little grittier overall and I like that a lot. They definitely stretch out and take it to a new place.

Here are they are recording it live.
