Technical wizard, virtuosic and masterful are just a few words to describe Stanley Clarke. Check him out on “Spanish Phases for Strings and Bass” and you will hear why he is one of the world’s best musicians. I love the back and forth between the strings and bass on this tune. It is a respectful exchange. There is room to breathe and wonder and yet, it sounds like Clarke is engaged in the heaviest and deepest of conversations. He’s thoughtfully debating, lining up facts and revealing the truth.
