2023-09-08 - 2023-09-13 Dawn Pemberton & Jenn Cianca Cortes Island, BC Hollyhock
Time: 12:00pm. Age restrictions: All Ages. For centuries, across cultures, and around the world people have made pilgrimages—moving towards distant, unfamiliar and often sacred places. While the destination often promised spiritual or personal redemption, the journey itself became a means of personal transformation and social connection. Today, pilgrimages continue to offer individuals unique opportunity to explore how space and place, creativity and song, walking and movement have an impact on our internal landscape. The practice of pilgrimage can be a way to cultivate tools that can be used to invite introspection and a deeper understanding of how we relate to and connect with one another and the world around us. We will spend each day in joyful discovery and reflection as we navigate the concepts of journey and destination, how to continue to cultivate and incorporate the concepts of pilgrimage in our everyday lives, deepening our relationship to space and place, and using creativity and song as a means of self-reflection, comfort and companionship. IMPORTANT NOTE: ‘Walking’ is a way of moving through our environment that is active, rather than passive, but by no means demands bipedal, self-propelled motion. If you have questions about this terminology as it pertains to accessibility and ability, please do not hesitate to contact us.

2022-01-20 - 2022-01-30 Ruby Singh’s Vox.Infold Vancouver, BC LOBE Studio
Time: 7:00pm. Admission: $19. Age restrictions: All Ages. Address: 713 E. Hastings Street. Vox.Infold, the latest project from Ruby Singh, is an a cappella offering, composed and (remarkably) recorded at a time when singing together was something that could kill us. Against the backdrop of the covid 19 pandemic and amidst potent social unrest, this powerhouse vocal ensemble of Indigenous, Inuit, Black and South Asian voices, reimagined how to sing together. The resulting work is so much more than a convergence of diverse vocal traditions but a complex rendering of what’s possible when we can hold each other’s humanity. The album dives into a full bodied, resonant and sensuous expression housed in polyrhythm, lush harmonies, mimicry, and polyphonic poetry. The resulting sonic landscape encompasses a non-linear journey in which we may find and care for each other. Evoking loneliness, joy, the mysterious and supernatural, Vox.Infold brings together musical luminaries, Dawn Pemberton, Inuksuk Mackay and Tiffany Ayalik of PIQSIQ, Russell Wallace, Tiffany Moses, Shamik Bilgi and Ruby Singh. They remind us that the human voice is an adaptation of the metabolic activity most crucial to our existence – breathing. This is how the atmosphere enters our beings and how we know we are intimately connected to our world.

Time: 10:00pm. Admission: Pay What You Can. Age restrictions: No Minors. Address: 1 Alexander St.. In the summer of 2002, a group of seven musician friends formed The Deep End out of a common love of soul and funk music. The band very quickly established a reputation for attracting large audiences and for getting people out of their seats and onto the dance floor, and have since had rooms cookin’ all over Vancouver, the Lower Mainland, Whistler and the BC Interior. The members of The Deep End take pride not only in their quality musicianship, but also in their ability to customize their shows according to the needs of their clients. At full force this is a 7-piece Funk, Motown, Soul, and Blues band, but also has the ability to satisfy more intimate background needs. For dinner sets or more subtle background music, the band offers everything from solo piano or guitar to a jazz trio, quarter or quintet. This flexibility fulfills a client’s entertainment needs from an intimate evening to a party that goes deep into the night. The Deep End can play almost any indoor or outdoor venue and will bring a full sound system if needed. The band specializes in club dates, regular house-band engagements, private and corporate events, wedding receptions, fundraisers and conventions. The musical joy and energy of the band is undeniable, and rampantly spreads to any audience encountered.

He will be supported by a full band and choir consisting of Marcus Mosely and Will Sanders of The Sojourners, Tonye Aganaba, Dawn Pemberton, Juhli Conlinn and Kristie McCraken. Once upon a time a revolutionary, multi-national, multi-racial coalition rebelled against US federal law to support people fleeing slavery to find freedom in Canada. Khari Wendell McClelland is a descendant of those that fled. Many people know this movement as the Underground Railroad. Fewer folks are familiar with the songs that accompanied them on the journey to freedom and resettlement. These songs have been reimagined using traditional and contemporary styles such as gospel, soul, folk, rock and hip hop. We will spend a night exploring these songs and the history and stories that accompany them.

We will explore various singing styles from different world vocal traditions. Drawing on Cuban, African and Gospel musicwe will be learning two, three and four part harmony singing and working to understand the basic rhythms and vocal quality within these different styles.Prior musical training is NOT required.
We will learn by ear so you don’t need to know how to read music. All you need is a love of singing and a desire to sing from the heart. You will leave energized and with some new beautiful harmonies ringing in your ears. We will provide you with a lyrics sheet for you to take home.
